Precinct Officials

G.S. 163-41 requires that election officials be registered voters and residents of the county in which the precinct is located, be of good repute, and be able to read and write. Those persons holding any elective office under the government of the State of North Carolina, or any political subdivision thereof cannot serve as a precinct official. Candidates cannot serve as precinct officials.

Both of the major political parties submit names for appointment as precinct officials, and the Board of Elections appoints a Chief Judge and two judges for each precinct. Assistants for each precinct are appointed just prior to an election. Election officials (the Chief Judge and judges) are appointed for two year terms. Assistants work as needed.

Qualified persons interested in working as election officials should contact the Board of Elections.
