Fire Marshal

The Sampson County Fire Marshal's Office is a division of Emergency Services and conducts fire inspections throughout the county and in each municipality. Effective July 1, 2016, several municipalities will assume responsibility for conducting fire prevention inspection services within the corporate limits and their established Extra Territorial Jurisdiction (ETJ). Please refer to the Area of Service chart below. The provisions of the fire code apply to all new and existing structures and conditions except those specifically exempted such as single-family dwellings and certain farm buildings.

The Fire Marshal's Office issues construction and operational permits required by the fire code, conducts plan reviews for new construction, and inspects and permits other activities such as flammable liquid tank installations and removals, erecting tents or air supported structures, carnivals and fairs, and firework displays. The office works closely with the Sampson County Inspections Department to ensure all structures are constructed and maintained to meet the minimum standards with respect to life safety.

Fire Investigations

The Sampson County Fire Marshal's Office works closely with the various Fire Departments throughout Sampson County to determine the origin and cause of every fire. We work closely with the Sheriff's Office, Municipal Police Departments, Office of State Fire Marshal, State Bureau of Investigation, and the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms when necessary, during the course of any fire investigation.

Civil Penalties

It is the goal of the Sampson County Fire Marshal's Office to work in conjunction with the owners and occupants of each place of business to ensure the safety of the public from fire or other emergencies. We work to educate the owners and occupants of each building on the various aspects of building safety through the inspection process. We do, however, have a zero tolerance on any locked or blocked exit door or any obstructed point in the means of egress. Locking devices shall be direct acting, require only one motion to unlock and open the exit door, and shall not require the use of a key, tool, or special knowledge to operate. Hasp, padlocks, slide bolts, and or security bars are prohibited on required exit doors. Citations are issued based on the amounts indicated below per day until corrected.
