Sampson County Update Regarding Winter Weather

[Sampson County, NC] – Sampson County Emergency Management is actively monitoring weather conditions and coordinating with partner agencies. Plans are in place and Sampson County remains ready to adjust operations if conditions change. Sampson County has declared a local State of Emergency on January 29, 2026.

Today, Department of Social Services (DSS) staff visited locations where unhoused residents are known to stay to offer support and connect them with available resources. Individuals seeking assistance ahead of the winter weather event are encouraged to contact the County Department of Social Services office: 910-592-7131.

Sampson County officials remain fully prepared to open shelters if conditions worsen. Residents are encouraged to prepare now and limit travel if conditions deteriorate. Emergency Management will continue monitoring conditions around the clock and will provide updates promptly if shelter operations are activated.

 

Weather Updates: As for updates obtained from the National Weather Service Raleigh, Winter Strom Warning and Extreme Cold Watch remain in effect from Saturday to Sunday for Sampson County. Snowfall accumulations of 4 to 8 inches are expected across central NC. Wind gusts of 25 to 35 mph will be possible and may lead to reduced visibilities and blowing and drifting snow.

 

Sampson County Government strongly encourages residents to:

  • Stay warm and safe indoors. Keep your home heated safely. Never use grills, ovens, or generators indoors or in garages. Ensure CO detectors are working. Let faucets drip slightly, open cabinet doors under sinks, and insulate exposed pipes if possible.
  • Charge devices, keep flashlights with extra batteries, and have blankets, medications, and non-perishable food for at least 72 hours.
  • Stay off the roads if possible. Roadway conditions are expected to deteriorate across the state. Please stay off the road and allow first responders to work safely. If you must travel, please use extreme cautious and allow extra time.
  • Check on elderly neighbors, people with medical needs, and those without reliable heat. Bring pets indoors and ensure animals have warm shelter and unfrozen water.
