Roseboro Animal Waste Spill

On Friday, January 23, 2026, at 7:16am the Sampson County 911 Center received a report of an animal byproduct spill at the intersection of S. East Street and E. Roseboro Street in Roseboro. The Roseboro Fire Department, along with Sampson County Emergency Services responded to the scene. Additional spills were also reported at the intersection of Old Mintz Highway (NC-411) and Elizabethtown Highway (NC-242), the intersection of S. East Street and W. Pinewood Street in Roseboro, and the intersection of NC-242 and NC-210 in Bladen County. The truck responsible for the spills did not remain on the scene of any of the spills.

While assisting with the investigation at the request of the Sampson County Sheriff’s Office, an officer with the Clinton Police Department observed a truck matching the description of the offender vehicle with a dump trailer covered in animal waste. The officer conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle and determined the vehicle was responsible for the spill. The truck was passing back through the area after unloading at the landfill.

The offending vehicle is owned by Ronys Trucking LLC of Salemburg, NC and was operated by Alvin Matthews Jr. of Clinton, NC. Matthews was cited by the Sampson County Sheriff’s Office for Littering, Failure to Stop in the Event of an Animal Waste Spill, and Failure to Secure Load. Additional charges were cited by the NC Highway Patrol following an inspection of the vehicle. Charges cited by the NC Highway Patrol include Carrier Name and/or USDOT Number not displayed, Inoperative Turn Signals, Leaking/Spilling/Blowing/Falling Cargo, and Tire Flat and/or Audible Air Leak.

Cleanup of the spilled animal waste was coordinated by Sampson County Emergency Services, Smithfield Foods, and Ronys Trucking.
