Spotlight on our Health Educator at the Sampson County Health Department
As we observe National Health Educator’s Week 2025, we take a moment to shine a spotlight on one of our most dedicated team members, Luke Smith, our Health Educator at the Sampson County Health Department (SCHD). Through tireless outreach, innovation, and compassion, Luke has made a profound impact on the health and well-being of our community.
Making a difference every day
From the first day Luke joined our team, it was clear that their mission aligned perfectly with SCHD’s mission: “to preserve, protect and promote the health, environment and well-being of the citizens of Sampson County”.
In her role, Luke has spearheaded a variety of programs in the Health Promotion & Education division, including presentations for schools, community groups, and health fairs, offering education on topics such as chronic disease management, family planning, and infectious disease prevention.
Innovation in education and outreach
What sets Luke apart is her creative approach to engaging our community. Whether it’s collaborating with our community partners or meeting people where they are—in schools, community centers, or local events—Luke has helped transform public health education from a lecture into a lived experience.
Luke’s workshops incorporate real-life stories, interactive tools, and culturally relevant materials, making health education accessible and engaging for all ages and backgrounds.
Impact you can see
Thanks to Luke’s efforts, we’ve seen increased participation in our educational programs, stronger partnerships with local organizations, and, perhaps most importantly, improved awareness among residents of their own role in health and wellness.
Luke also plays a key role in our department’s outreach for prenatal, child health, and family planning services, helping ensure our residents, especially those with greater need, receive timely information and support.
Why this work matters
In a rural county like Sampson, health education is more than just delivering information—it’s about building trust, breaking down barriers, and helping residents feel empowered. Luke understands that when people know why something matters and how it applies to their daily lives, they’re far more likely to make positive changes.
By taking that approach, Luke helps our department fulfill its mission of not only preventing disease but promoting healthy behaviors and ensuring health equity across our community.
A personal note of thanks
Luke, thank you for the long hours, the thoughtful planning, the endless outreach, and the heart you bring to your work. Because of you, our community is stronger, better-informed, and more resilient.
In celebration of National Health Educator’s Week 2025, we honor you and celebrate the vital role you play at SCHD.
